The Middle East has been and will remain a key area of interest to the United States and a setting for conflicts for many years into the future. The region and its problems however, often remain unfamiliar to US military, intelligence, and even foreign policy professionals and decision-makers. This course will introduce First Responders to the various critical issues of the Middle East and prepare them for critical analysis of the concepts that have the greatest impact upon the interest and national security policies of the United States. The purpose of this course is to give a comprehensive overview of the historical settings and current political events that make the Middle East such a volatile region. Among the issues that will be addressed are the sixty year old Arab-Israeli confrontation, on-going ethnic conflicts, unfolding nuclear proliferation, emerging Radicalism in Islam, terrorism, economic, and demographic challenges.
