Executive Director
John Boatman has specialized in the development of mission-focused information products and services for the defense, intelligence and homeland security communities since 1990.
He is the former Chief Content Officer and Board member of UK-based Jane's Information Group, the world's leading provider of defense and security information, where he was responsible for devising and implementing editorial and commercial growth strategies for the company's 150-plus books, periodicals, electronic data and online products.
Since 2003, as a Washington DC-based consultant, Mr. Boatman has assisted private-sector and government clients with strategic planning, specialized research, business development, product and content development, and other services. Much of his work is focused on integrating digital content with software tools and online applications.
Mr. Boatman began his career as a journalist covering international trade and security issues in Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. His final reporting assignment was as Pentagon Correspondent for Jane's Defence Weekly.
In 1995, he was asked by Jane's management to establish the company's first-ever New Product Development division. Over the next five years he broadened the company's subject expertise and content focus to include terrorism, insurgency and other non-state threats -- emphasizing not just the origins of security risk but also the most effective responses to all types of unconventional attacks and hazards. In addition, he established a new corporate division dedicated to developing high-value electronic and online products using Jane's data, news and analytical content.
Mr. Boatman is the originator of the acclaimed Jane's Public Safety Series of handbooks and guides, which address such critical security challenges as responding to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive attacks and cyber threats; protecting physical assets and resources such as maritime, aviation, rail and utility infrastructures; and improving personal safety and security at offices, industrial facilities, schools, homes and other critical locations. More than half a million copies of the handbooks -- in English or translated into five other languages -- are in use around the world as reference guides, training aids and on-scene resources.
He was educated in the US and Europe and attended Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in International Security Affairs, a certificate in Asian Studies and language specialties in Chinese and French.
